The Student’s Corner

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 5.0/5 (4 votes cast)

The Student’s Corner is a place where high school/community college students in our community can access other Arabs studying at various universities or colleges and ask any questions they may have. They may want to ask about a school they’re interested in attending, a major that is of interest to them, or the living situation at a college/university they’re considering. They might have already made their choice and are looking for a potential roommate. The goal is to assist our community by making available to them every possible resource throughout their educational endeavor.

This is NOT only for the Fairouzeh community.  All are encouraged to participate.

Anyone interested in being added to this list please click here.

Sample Questions you might want to ask:

1. Why did you choose the school you are currently attending?

2. Why did you choose your major?

3. Did you change your major or has it always been ______?

4. I see that you live (On/Off campus) why did you choose that and are you sticking to it or are you planning on changing that?

5. I already got into ______ and I’m fairly confident that I will be attending there. Are you possibly looking for a roommate, or do you know someone that is?

About: I’m completing my last semester at California State University, Northridge. I will be graduating with an MS in Counseling with a specialization in School Counseling. I’m currently in the very last stages of completing my Masters thesis which is original research examining the parenting practices on overall social competence in Middle Eastern-American adolescents living in Los Angeles. Social competence is being measured using self-esteem and academic motivation. I also hold a Pupil Personnel Services Credential which licenses me to practice counseling in grades K-12. I spent the last 4 years working at John H. Francis Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley where I was an 11th/12th grade counselor as well as the Testing Coordinator.
I love what I do for a living and cannot wait to get back into the work force. If there are no counseling positions available in the Fall, I will be re-enrolling at the community college full-time to begin pursuit of a math degree and teaching credential.

For those of us who are recent college graduates and are interested in helping prospective college students, would there be any objection to us participating? Or do we not meet the specific criteria you are interested in?

Julie Grair says:

You guys are fantastic! I’m really excited to see this much cohesive involvement, especially with education and the youth in the community. I appreciate you considering my edits without taking offense. I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist at times (not always, just sometimes). Let me know how else I can help!

Joseph Hourany says:

@Julie we are always looking for ways to improve. We seek constructive criticism at all times, especially from experts in the field. I’m glad you like it and I’m even more glad that you are so wiling to get involved. This is what the FAA is all about. It makes me really feel like I’m part of a community.
